I once dreamt that I found two fawns sleeping in a strangely corrupt and derelict version of my family cabin. Throughout the dream, I felt as if something were haunting the coal-black rooms of that place as I tried to hold onto the fawns that were quickly growing cold in my arms. The more their life seemed to slip away, the more I noticed a blackness creeping over their skin from the head down. Everything felt so hopeless and bleak until something inside reminded me that I was in one of my noirs animaux dreams. The recurring sleeping moments wherein black animals bring me various messages and trials. As the fawns’ lives faded from their physical bodies, I felt their spirits leak out, free and reassuring, reminding me that the things we hold tightly to will never stay the same, and that though they may leave us, our love of them will keep them from dying away. These ghostly fawns have been reimagined in my work numerous times, often headless or sharing one face. They represent themes of loss, love, and the connection of two sides of oneself. I hope these dancing fawns remind you that though nothing will ever stay, it will never be lost to you either. All that you love will always remain to walk in your shadows.
